AND... Episode 2: A Dive into Ocean Conservation, Turtles, Sharks, and Resilience with Andy Dehart
In this episode of Resilience Gone Wild, I chat with Andy Dehart, CEO of Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. Andy takes us through his fascinating career journey—from shark biologist and aquarium builder to leading an amazing sea turtle hospital and marine life center. He captivates us with stories about tiger sharks' feeding strategies and the incredible survival tactics of sea turtles when faced with predators. And career choices he made that others might call mistakes but he calls learning opportunities.
Throughout our conversation, Andy highlights the resilience of both nature and humans, drawing powerful lessons from marine life’s adaptability. He also dives into the vital role aquariums play in educating the public and advocating for the protection of marine animals and their habitats, such as coral reefs and seagrass beds, which are increasingly threatened by climate change and pollution.
Andy also shares insights on the mission of purpose-driven organizations, the challenges they face, and the need for sustainable funding. Plus, he offers an exciting glimpse into the future vision for Loggerhead, including plans to expand community outreach and continue providing free access to underserved communities.

Wow Animal of the Week: Juvenile Japanese Eels—The Great Escape Artists!
You may remember the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, where Jonah spends three days in the belly of a giant fish before being spit out. But here’s a real-life escape artist that doesn’t need divine intervention: juvenile Japanese eels! These slimy little creatures are the only known animals that can escape from their predator after being swallowed alive.
Once inside the belly of a dark sleeper fish, these eels don't just sit around. They swim backward through the fish’s digestive tract and make a daring escape through its gills! Their super-slick mucus coating protects them from digestive juices, but they only have about three minutes to make their getaway. Don’t worry, though—they average just 56 seconds for their escape.
The resilience lesson for us?
Listen to your instincts! When things seem unexpectedly off, dark, and hostile, and you're struggling to move or breathe, it's time to get out. And while you’re navigating danger, slip on your protective coating of courage and wits. Sometimes spiritual protection might be on your side, but remember—you’re your own best protector!
Wow Plant of the Week: Papyrus—Nature’s Resilient Architect!
Papyrus isn’t just a plant; it’s a superstar of ancient history! Some of the earliest important writings, after those carved into stone, were created on papyrus—a plant native to the Nile Delta. This resilient reed was the foundation for famous documents like the Egyptian Book of the Dead (circa 1550 BCE), which Egyptians believed helped guide souls through the afterlife. Another ancient gem, the Ebers Papyrus (also from around 1550 BCE), is one of the oldest medical texts, offering remedies and insights still marveled at today.
Papyrus thrives in waterlogged wetlands, with hollow stems that help it stay afloat—no drowning for this plant! And it wasn’t just used for writing; ancient Egyptians wove it into boats, mats, and ropes. Plus, papyrus could be harvested again and again because of its rapid regeneration—nature’s gift that just kept on giving.
The resilience lesson for us?
When life throws you into deep waters, find your way to stay buoyant! Like papyrus, tap into your anchor points—whether it’s your values, supportive relationships, or personal strengths. These will help you rise above challenges and stay rooted, just as papyrus kept ancient Egyptians thriving in tough conditions.

Who Knew?
A leafcutter ant can carry up to 50 times their body weight! That would be like a human carrying a truck! This superpower is really helpful for the ants since their favorite food and resource is large leaves which they have to forage for. They actually lift the whole leaf with just their jaws! Here's an amazing little video about them and what they do with all those leaves! It's incredible!
Words for the Wild!
A nature-positive society goes beyond sustainability by actively restoring and regenerating the natural world. Instead of just minimizing harm, it aims to halt biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems, and create a thriving balance where both nature and humans can flourish together. The term emerged from global conservation efforts, popularized by organizations like WWF and the Convention on Biological Diversity, as a response to the urgent need for action in addressing climate change and habitat destruction.
Why does it matter? By fostering a nature-positive society, we can secure a healthier planet, ensuring that both natural ecosystems and our communities thrive for generations to come.
